Why homeowners here switch to composite
Charlotte summers are hot and wet, and pine pollen coats everything in April. A wood deck here needs washing, sanding and sealing every couple of years to stay ahead of rot and splinters. Trex boards are made from a blend of recycled wood fiber and recycled plastic with a protective shell, so the routine drops to a wash with soap and water.
What goes into one of our Trex decks
- Footings and posts sized and set to Mecklenburg County inspection requirements.
- Pressure-treated framing with joist spacing that matches the boards you choose. Some layouts, like diagonal boards, need tighter spacing.
- Joist tape on the tops of joists and beams so water does not sit in the fastener holes.
- Hidden fasteners for a clean surface, with a picture-frame border if you want one.
- Fascia to cover the rim joists so the frame does not show.
Enhance, Select or Transcend
Trex Enhance is the entry line. Trex Select is the middle line. Trex Transcend is the top line with the widest color range. All three are composite. The price gap between them on a typical deck is often smaller than people expect, because labor and framing do not change. Your estimate can show more than one line side by side.
Railings, stairs and lighting
Railing is a big share of the look and the budget. Common picks are composite rail with black round aluminum balusters, all-aluminum railing, or cable for a view. Stairs get riser boards to match the deck. Low-voltage post-cap and stair lights make the deck usable after dark and make steps safer.
Common questions
Does Trex get hot in the sun?
Any deck board gets warm in a Charlotte July, and darker colors get warmer. Lighter colors stay cooler. If the deck faces south or west with no shade, ask to see light samples in the sun before you choose.
Is Trex slippery when wet?
Composite has a textured, embossed surface. Like any deck surface it can get slick with pollen, leaves or algae, so a rinse in spring and fall keeps it safe.
How long does the frame last under Trex?
The boards are composite but the frame is still pressure-treated wood. We use joist tape on the tops of joists and beams to shed water, which helps the frame keep up with the boards.
